CES Premiere: DigiLens Launches Consumer AR Waveguide Display With Optical Manufacturing Leader Young Optics

DigiLens

DigiLens Inc., the Silicon Valley-based startup revolutionizing AR displays through innovative waveguide optics and proprietary material sets, today announced the immediate availability of its MonoHUD display for consumer augmented reality applications. With a crystal clear lens, the display not only exhibits high brightness and efficiency, but it will also be supplied in volume by Young Optics of Taiwan, one of the world’s leading display manufacturers.

CES attendees can experience the AR display in a BMW motorcycle helmet at the Texas Instruments Village. This hands-free, communications and control application for two-wheelers is dubbed “MotoHUD,” where the voice-activated app allows the rider to pull-up GPS, bike status, and answer phone calls and text messages, all while keeping their eyes focused where it’s needed most—the road.

“Our DigiLens waveguide MonoHUD is the key to delivering a breakthrough hands free consumer communication experience,” said DigiLens CEO Chris Pickett. “Young Optics is a world class manufacturer and will likely be the first to supply a high volume consumer AR display. We are currently working with customers in consumer, enterprise, automotive, avionics and military market sectors. The combination of smartphones and wireless AR displays is spawning an AR foundation to support rapid growth.”

“We are very excited to start the production of DigiLens waveguide displays for consumer AR applications,” said Claude Hsu, CEO of Young Optics, an integrated design and manufacturing leader of imaging and projection optics. “Now we can offer a unique thin transparent display solution, combining our long-standing experience in pico-projectors, camera lens and HUD optics with DigiLens’ waveguide solution.”

“HUDWAY, a leader in comprehensive head-up display solutions for drivers, is collaborating with DigiLens to drive availability of MonoHUD to revolutionize motorcycle riding communications and control as we know it,” said Ivan Klabukov, CEO of HUDWAY.

The MonoHUD AR display is full color, nHD image resolution and an unobscured user field-of-view of 105°, and AR display field-of-view of 25° diagonal. It has a maximum brightness of 8,000 nits and up to eight hours of battery life due to outstanding waveguide efficiency. The DigiLens MonoHUD is expected to be available for purchase later this year, for a price under US $399 in high volume.

About DigiLens

DigiLens’ waveguide optics allow OEMs to finally access eyeglass-thin displays for wearable AR applications. The company has developed a high-performance photopolymer material and copy process to manufacture precision diffractive optics by printing (not etching) the nanostructures. The resultant eyeglass display has higher efficiency and a wider field of view compared to conventional waveguides. The “printable” feature delivers the key low-cost manufacturing benefit for DigiLens strategic partners, including Panasonic, Sony, Continental, Rockwell Collins and Foxconn.
